Donald Pickles Story

I lived in Marshfields — a district of Bradford. On a Sunday my father and I used to walk up to Wibsey where my grandparents lived.

I was just eleven years old. My grandparents had their radio on.

Very shortly, the voice of Neville Chamberlain announcing we were now at war came over the airwaves. I recall how grim my father and grandparents looked on hearing the news. This was Sunday Sept 3rd 1939.
