I was only 13 when the war was declared, it was a Sunday, the grim looks on the older people's faces meant nothing to me. I had no idea what war was or what to expect. My cousin and i lived in London and were evacuated to a place called Earls Barton in Northhamptonshire. We stayed 3 days and for those 3 days and 3 nights my cousin cried continuously. There was a well in the courtyard that served 6 or so cottages and we had a candle to light us to bed. I remember feeling shocked to learn there was no running water or electricity. On our return to London we went to ''day continuation school'' as all the schools were closed with not so many children around and those who were were all in one classroom, 5 year olds to 14. We had an Anderson shelter in the garden dug deep down covered in earth and sand bags.
