During my time at RAF Ballykelly we worked in the stores, and one night each week, two of the girls who were on duty had to go down to the fuel installation and open up the valves in preparation to receive aviation fuel which was being delivered by a bowser from Derry. Whenever we went down to the fuel installation we got to know some of the airmen who were on the same shift as us, down at the other end of the camp. Sometimes, depending on who was on duty, they would come up to our work room for supper, or we would go down there. Of course this was forbidden if you were caught on. One night when 鈥楽hortie鈥, a wee Scottish girl, and I were on duty, we had gone down to the other end of the camp and were having supper at the mens office. We just had the supper made, it was beans and toast, when the door opened and two SP鈥檚 came in. Immediately they asked, 鈥淲hat are you鈥檚 doing here?鈥. 鈥淕oing to have our supper.鈥 鈥淕et out, you鈥檙e on a charge.鈥 If it hadn鈥檛 been for Warrant Officer Ridgeway, who taunted us for a while, we were in trouble; but he saved us from being put on a charge.
