I was trying to get home at night. I was late and missed my bus to Wirksworth. I started walking when a motorist drew up and gave me a lift, just to Duffield 鈥 no further because of petrol rationing. I started walking, looking for a house with a telephone to phone my uncle to come and pick me up. The lady of the house said 鈥測ou must stay the night 鈥 we are quite respectable people, my husband is a retired Major from the Army in India for many years鈥. She gave me a crepe de shine nighty, and brought me a cup of tea. Next day I continued the journey home. Mother gave me some eggs to take to this lady because she had been so kind. My hostess was very surprised and pleased.
