I met my husband in 1940. He had just come back from Dunkirk and was now stationed at Canterbury Barracks.
One night we were woken at 3am by a loud bang. My husband had to leave our house in Dover Road to go to the barracks. There was an air raid in progress and I had to quickly leave the house wearing silk pyjamas, thin shoes and a summer coat. I flew down the stairs where I found other occupants of the building. An unexploded bomb came down outside the front door sending everyone across the room showering them with soot. Our faces were black. Due to the danger of staying in the house I persuaded everyone to leave the building. Outside the view was unbelievable with hardly a house left standing. I still remember the thick layers of broken glass on the roads and pavement. After the all clear several hours later I found my husband with his men, digging people out.
I lost all my family heirlooms and the birthday presents received on my recent 21st birthday. I was severely shaken by this raid and still have panic attacks to this day.
