There was a squadron of Hurricanes based at St. Mary's, on submarine patrol. I remember my father telling me that a Hurricane pilot had been killed when, in a mock attack, he crashed his plane on the main mast of the old Scillonian when it was on it's way to Scilly. The squadron that was based at St. Mary's was under canvas and was there for some time.
