In 1943 there was a very heavy air raid on Hull and my home town, Scarborough, was also bombed. The following morning amongst the damage was the complete devastation of "Dennis & Sons" the local Printing works. So overnight, myself and many others who worked there were without a job.
So I decided to join the Land Army and was sent to Norfolk. I was given accommodation in a hostel called "The Shooting Box" with 50 other Yorkshire girls. We were sent to many different farms where work was bedly needed. We did many varied jobs, picking fruit, digging potatotes, haymaking etc. In the evenings we would go to the village hall where they held dances and it was here that I met Arthur Moseley. His camp was in North Creake and I was impressed by the R.A.F. uniform and the fact that he was a wireless operator/rear gunner in Halifax and Lancaster bombers (no 171 Squadron, 100 Group).
One weekend he went home to Woking, Surrey and arrived back in a car which he had bought. I was thrilled because not a lot of people owned cars in those days and he used to take me out to the envy of my friends.
In 1945 we both had leave and went to Scarborough as he wanted to meet my parents. While we were there it was V.E. Day and he asked very formally for my hand in marriage. When I said "Yes" he gave me an engagement ring which he had already bought and was in his pocket awaiting my reply! We were married in Scarborough on October 6th 1945 and spent our honeymoon in a lovely hotel in Princes Street Edinburgh.
Arthur was demobbed on 5th December 1946 and I left the Land Army. We went to live in Woking. Our first house cost 拢1,100 which seemed an enormous amount of money in those days. We had two daughters Patricia was born on Christmas Day 1948 and Maureen was born in 1950. We now have two grandsons and 3 grand-daughters and 3 great grandsons.
We have enjoyed a very happy life and have a lovely family. Our recent Diamond Wedding brought back very vividly the days of the war and how we first met. We are both now in our Eighties.
