The war, if I remember, started June/July time with aerial dog fights. We would watch vapor trails in the sky as the fighters fought one another in the beautiful blue sky. You would see aircraft being shot down. Not knowing whether they were British or German but in our eyes they were always German. I can remember one aircraft coming down, we all cheered until my Grandfather told us that it was one of ours. To us though it was very exciting, the real war was yet to start — not very exciting.
