A small incident showing how severe rationing of food was in wartime Britain. An observation made by a toddler whilst standing in the queue at the Butchers shop 鈥 鈥淢ummy look at those funny sausages hanging up鈥. The 鈥榮ausages鈥 in question were a bunch of mock bananas hanging from the nameplate of the greengrocer next door!!
You probably know that only essential food stuff was imported into this country during war time and there is a pantry in the Science Museum which shows how small our rations were.
