Following the death of my Mother last Oct: I came upon a letter that My Father had written to her on the 1st June 1940.I quote from his letter.
" Once more we are in a very tight corner, and if we get out of it we shall indeed be very lucky. We are now about 8 miles from Dunkirk, the main force have retired, and all we have here are a few infan"try to cover us as we blow the last Bridge, and that is my job.
The old man has just been to see me, and told me to make my own way back as the rest of the coy are moving. He cannot give me any transport, so he says I'll have to get a lift or walk, but he's wrong. I've found a tank that was left and I've managed to start it, so that problem is solved.
The Germans are about 600yds away but I can't blow the bridge till I get orders from Headquarters. All I've got to do is to put the fuse to the powder and light it. The Major says I must do it myself, the two sappers to cover me with a Bren Gun, but enough of this----------
It breaks my heart not to be able to write to you because I know how you will worry, I haven't had a letter for over a fortnight,we have been almost surrounded for 3 weeks, all we have to eat is what we can find, we've had no bread for three weeks, but I'm quite well, but terribly sad to think I may never see you or the children again. But up to now I've had a charmed life, so I think I'll be able to manage it once again.------------------" (End of quote)
I am pleased to say that my Father did return home safely having been evacuated from Dunkirk, and lived until 1974.
