When the war started in 1939 I lived with my parents. We lived in Kent that year. I was 4 years old and we all moved North to Newcastle where we stayed 鈥榯il war ended in 1945. My brothers were both war babies.
I remember the bombs dropping and being a bit scared, living in flats, the lower flat shared the same air raid shelter. The air raid sirens went off and we鈥檇 all scurry down to the shelter 鈥榯il the raid was over.
One night the bombs seemed to be closer. In fact one exploded on Matthew Bank which was very near to our street and did quite a bit of damage. My mother taught me to listen to the hum of the engines of the planes so I could tell the difference between our bombers and the German bombers.
Food and clothing were rationed and my favourite sweets. We would have to carry Gas Masks to school every day. Bananas and lots of thing were scarce.
These are some of my memories of World War II.
