I was 14 when the war broke out. I remember the day war broke out. I'd just started work in an office. I got engaged at 17 to a rear-gunner, but he stood no chance and was killed when I was 18. It was cruel, wicked. They knew they were just fodder. So sad.
In Oxford we were quite lucky because there was no bombing. We saw the planes go over but towards Coventry and London.
I can remember the funny hairstyles and 'bacon clangers'. It was food that they gave you to fill you up, all suet!
My father died when I was twenty. He just saw the end of the war. He was in the 1914 war.
So my war years were happy and sad. In a way we had a good time in Oxford. We had loads of evacuee chidren come to live with us. One of the children, Pat Steed went on to the stage in the West End. A sweet, pretty little girl.
We did our bit in our way. There are so many memories, it's hard to decide which to tell.
