One day in 1945 in Magdeburg/Germany my father and I emerged from days underground for some fresh air and saw the first US tank appear on a street corner. On seeing the tank I got totally carried away and waved wildly only to see the cannon slowly begining to turn my way. My father an old soldier shouted "down" following which we crept back into our cellar. The Americans clearly thought I had a hand grenade to throw as there were still SS troops fighting 'to the last' from the surrounding buildings.
