NOVEMBER 6 1940 鈥 31 DECEMBER 1940

R.A.F. Losses; 209 Aircraft. 72 in combat, 55 on ground, 82 destroyed or abandoned in the evacuation.
163 Officers and men killed, missing or prisoner of war, of which 150 were aircrew.

Sgt. Merifield, John. 30 Sqn. A/Gnr Bristol Blenheim.
The second son of Edith Mary and the late Mr John Merifield of 7, Hopps Street, West Hartlepool. He joined the RAFVR in May 1939 and was called up when war was declared. He was educated at Elwick Road Central School. As the first British airman to be killed in the defence of Greece he was given a full state funeral. The King being represented and the President attended personally. One Greek newspaper wrote 鈥淭he coffin was covered with two crossed flags-the flags of Greece and Britain鈥. The procession was filmed by Pathe News and shown in Cinemas throughout the British Commonwealth. As the first casualty of the battle, as his aircraft patrolled over Valona in Albania and was attacked by three fighters from 349 Squadrigilia, the Greek sculptor Phamyreas proposed making a symbolic bust of him in Pentelic marble, the same stone of which the famous Athens Parthenon is built.

The aircraft was shot down by Italian fighters while bombing Valona during the unit鈥檚 first detachment to the Greek campaign. The aircraft was seen to explode in mid-air with the loss of all the crew.

On patrol over Tepelene area, 13 fighters engaged a large group of enemy fighters and his aircraft went down in flames. He baled out and Squadron Leader Hickey landed in a waterlogged field near Argyrokastron and with the aid of some Greek soldiers he was located and transferred to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, he died of his wounds that evening.
