This is Ted's story. When he joined the army it was just after Dunkirk. The equipment he was given came from soldiers who had served in France and was not even clean. The groundsheet he was given was covered in blood. When he complained he was told "Stop complaining, soldier. Go and wash it." This was his first day in service.
