"I was 7 when the war started. I lived in Manchester. Children were evacuated to the local area as it was considered "safe" by the government. Two of my cousins came to live in our house, as they lived near the Hornchurch aerodrome. Once, in the middle of the night (or there about) there was a bomb warning. We all ran down into the cellar of the house, because we were considered safe and thus had no bomb shelter. I was in there in the darkness for a couple of hours with my Mum, Granddad, Aunt, Cousins and Sister. I thought it was great fun as I was 5 years old at the time. Then the all-clear sounded and there had been no bombs. My whole family was hugely relieved.
Rationing
No sweets
No bananas
No oranges
Limited amounts of everything
This led to some very strange dinners such as: potatoes, onions and gravy for dinner. there were absolutely no toys for Christmas, but as my father worked in a POW camp, he once brought me home a toy that a German POW had made for me.
