From the age of eighteen to twenty one I worked as an oxy- eceteylyne welder on Lancaster bombers. First I welded bomb containers which needed a heavy weld. Then I had to pass a test to work on the elevators located on the wings which you had to use a very light weld on. I also riveted the wings. I had three brothers in the forces. The youngest of twenty one was killed at Tobruk in 1941. The eldest was taken prisoner of war.
The middle one almost lost his life in Burma with Typhoid. When I worked as a wleder on the Lancaster bomber sometimes I came in late or had a day of to go to the pictures. The man in cahrge called me in and said he had had enough. I had to go to the labour exchange opposite Quarry Hill Flats. The woman there said that my work was very important war work, and as a punishment she could fine me or give me 3 months in jail.
