The workings of the searchlight fascinated me no end, and we often went out to the field to watch what was going on, so ….. I thought…. ‘Why not make my own?’.
Not of course the million candle power of the real one, but even better a small one within my capabilities. So, after thought, I found a used golden syrup tin, (yes we did have golden syrup then) a torch bulb, and for power? Well the obvious source was the mains electricity. I unplugged the back of the radio, took off the plug, but unfortunately, while trying to wire it into the torch bulb, the two bare ends touched, and there was a sharp bang, small flash and a blown fuse somewhere in the system; After all, no one told me to switch off before I started;
My Dad said if I would have had a shock it would have probably killed me. I not only had an electric shock, but a big surprise as well, and it did not kill me!
(DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME; EVEN WITH A GROWN UP TO HELP, ELECTRICITY IS MORE DANGEROUS NOW).
