I joined the Women’s Land Army in 1943 and worked on Lypiatt Farm, Miserden, Gloucestershire, for eight months. I can remember fainting on the first morning as I was not used to being up so early — 6am was a very early start for me!
We learned to milk by hand, helped with the haymaking and harvesting and field work in general. German POW’s helped on the farm during busy periods.
I passed my proficiency test for milking and dairy work at Cirencester Park and was proud to receive my certificate and badge. I also spent some time working with a pedigree Geurnsey herd at Oliver’s Farm in Painswick.
I mostly worked and lived with girls from Bristol, although I do recall that some did not stay too long!
We lived in a wing of Miserden Park House and I really did enjoy my time there.
I spent three years approximately with the Women’s Land Army during which time I met my husband.
