When war broke out I was married and living in Darlington.
My husband was called up when our first daughter was small. My mother had an off licence in Gurney Street; I used to help her. We sold bottled beer and beer from pumps, the horse drawn dray from the brewery used to call every week to bring barrels of beer, folk would buy it in jugs.
We used to go to see if the dray horses had 'left' anything! If they had we'd put it in a bucket and spread it on the garden!
My husband went to Gosport and Portsmouth with the navy, he worked in the engine room of an articifer ship. His first was HMS Chelsea the next HMS Winston.
I used to travel down to see him I stayed in digs in Gosport. It was a long way from home.
I remember when North Road shops were attacked (railway works) by German 'planes everyone was talking about it the next day
