Starting off as a railway porter, and then a fireman on the GWR engines, all through the World War II having to get up for duty at all different hours, being woken by a GWR caller as early as 3 a.m. in the mornings, and cycling to work in the blackout. Never complaining, and a good worker, and loved by all who knew and worked with him. Unfortunately died October 8th 1985 at the age of 58 yrs. He did pass out for the Merchant Navy, but the government deferred him for being on essential service for the GWR during the war. He was a bit disappointed at not doing his bit, (as he put it). But I think he did his bit well and with pride at being in the employment of the GWR on essential service, at an important period of history.
