This story has been added to The People鈥檚 War Website by CSV Volunteer Olivia Davey on behalf of the author Philip Thomas who understands the site鈥檚 terms and conditions.

My Father was in the Post Office in Connor Downs. It was owned by a Mr Jope. Already in the Post Office was Mr O.G Harvey of Connor Downs. I remember my father, Mr Lawrence and Mr Lawrence鈥檚 Son, David, building his bungalow at Lowenec Cresent at the top of the village. He owned a 1929 6陆 litre Bentley. Father got behind him in the Post Office and said 鈥渟tick 鈥榚m up.鈥 Mr Harvey fainted, and Mr Jope had to get a bucket of water to bring him round. He went out like a light.

I remember my Father saying when you was in The Home Guard and was out walking by night and heard someone coming and couldn鈥檛 see no-one, you would have to shout 鈥淗alt who goes there, Friend or Foe?鈥
