My story is very short and concerns my father who was in the Home Guard in Brighton.

On duty on the South Downs one night my dad heard an unusual noise. Three times he shouted "Halt - who goes there" with no response, and warning that he was going to fire, he did just that by pointing his rifle in the air and pulling the trigger.

Not only did this action knock him off balance, but from behind him came a courting couple, who were so busy concentrating on each other that they did not hear the warnings. They helped my dad to his feet and went on their way.

Not only was my dad facng the wrong way, luckily as he may have injured the courting couple, but when he got back to barracks he was fined 2/6 [ 2 shillings and sixpence (about 12.5p)] for the wrongful discharge of this rifle and wasting a bullet!

Little wonder that he laughed so hard at Dad's Army - and say how realistic that programme was.
