During the war, Herbert serviced lighthouses. He served on tons of lighthouses including the Patricia and the Prince Phillip. He left Harwich and went to ... (sic) and led a convoy to ....... in Ireland but ran out of food as there was only a weekly boat. However, a Canadian boat gave some mighty good supplies. Back at Harwich the officers took a share of the food. Mr Gardiner got smolked salmon, but didn鈥檛 eat it; he sold it to a local hotel.

Herbert served for twenty years.

....... won a Victoria cross on a trawler/storm ship; he went alongside another ship that was in flames and dowsed the fire with a hose.
