During the Second World War, Major Robert Payne - due to the two day late arrival of British troops - was surrounded by German troops and lost many of his fellow fighting soldiers. Although badly wounded himself he managed to dispose of many German tanks with his Piat Gun.
My husband who was a Mechanical Engineer, London (Hons)was on the list of 鈥渨ould-be鈥 officers but was called with 25 fellow Engineers to a secret ammunitions site in Witton, Birmingham to work on the development of the Piat Gun. He used to visit remote parts of Scotland to test in. He was of Scottish birth but worked in Manchester. We met during the war but it was quite secret what he was doing. He told me after the war was over. We were married in 1946, he had returned to Manchester and I moved up here in 1946. Sadly he died 11 years ago.
This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by Joanne Brown from WM CSV Action Desk on behalf of Elizabeth D Ward and has been added to Elizabeth D Ward fully understands the sites terms and conditions.
