鈥淲hen the Second World War started I was only three, so I don鈥檛 remember much when it first started. I was not lucky enough to be evacuated during the war so I was quite scared in case my street got hit by German bombers. The black outs were horrible as it was very dark as you can imagine; everywhere you looked it was black. We had to black out the windows with anything we could find so our towns and cities would be harder to spot by the German bombers if no light was appearing. I lived in Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne at the time of World War Two. I can remember getting up in the middle of the night when the bomb siren went off and moving to the Anderson shelter in my back garden which was covered in soil. The bomb sirens became more common where I lived during the end of the war. At the start there were only some, but nearer the end it happened sometimes twice a day. Worst of all, we never knew when it was going to happen.鈥
鈥淚 once remember my friend telling me that she saw a German pilot setting fire to his plane which was shot down during the bombings. He was trying to set fire to it so that we couldn鈥檛 use it for our own benefit.鈥
鈥淣ot only was I worried about the bombings but my farther went off to serve his country, he was away for a few years and I was so happy to see him when he eventually came back. I did not go and work in a factory because I was too young at the time of the war, but my sister worked in a factory producing weapons for the army. Thankfully we weren鈥檛 stuck in the house all day because people just tried to get on with their everyday lives. If we ever needed to go on the public transport as it was always running.鈥
