I was born in 1936 and so was only three years old when the war started and nine when it finished. As a child I just accepted war as part of life as I had never known anything else.
My father was in the regular army and so entered the war at the beginning and I do not remember anything about him until the age of nine. He must have come home on leave as my brother was born in 1942 but I couldn't remember him at all. All I knew of him was his letters which came quite regularly.
I remember going to school and hoping that the air raid warning would sound before I got half way because if we were nearer to school we had to go on and go into the shelter there but if we were nearer to home then we went back there.
Everyone in the neighbourhood pulled together and many nights were spent with the children next door all in the same bed downstairs when the air raids were taking place.
