I was sixteen years old and working in the stone quarries at Portland, Dorset. Very hard work and with little prospect for the future.One afternnon in January 1939 I down toolsgot on my bike and rode to the Army Recruitment office and by five oclock i was in the Royal Artillary , I put my age on one year as I was to young to join.Iwent to Woolwich Royal Artillary Barracks the next day for the start of my training, two days later i was crying my eyes out wanted to go home,once over that I enjoyed the army life and would do the same thing over again.
