MY NAN USED TO TELL ME ,WHEN SHE WAS IN THE WAR WORKING ON THE TUBES, SHE USED TO SIGNAL TRAINS ALONG THE DISTRICT AND PICADILLY LINE FROM HAMMERSMITH TO BOSTON MANOUR. SHE WOULD WATCH THE BOMBS COME DOWN AND SIGNAL TO TRAINS TO PASS THROUGH SAFELEY. ONE STATION (STANFORD BROOK )SHE USED TO CALL STAND AND LOOK AS TRAINS WOULD ALWAYS PASS THIS STATION WITHOUT STOPPING AND WAS THE ONLY STATION TRAINS NEVER STOPPED AT AS IT WAS TOO DANGERIOUS.
MY GRANDAD WAS IN FRANCE FIGHTING AT DUNKIRK AND NEVER SPOKE ABOUT HIS EXPERIENCE EXEPT BODYS AS FAR AS THE EYE COULD SEE AND THE SEE AS CRIMSON AS FAR OUT AS VISIBLE, MY MUM REMEMBERS BEING EVACUATED TO PRESTON AS MY OTHER GRANDAD WAS A TEACHER AND SHE SPOKE OF BEING OUTCASTE BY THE PEOPLE UP THERE UNTIL THE KIDS RELISED WHAT WAS HAPPENING WHEN COVENTRY WAS BOMBED AND IT BROUGHT IT HOME. MY DAD REMEMBERED BEING IN THE AIR AID SHELTER IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD IN EALING AND A BOMB FALLING TWO STREETS AWAY AND THE FEAR AND TERROR.
