This is a story of events that happened to me and my two brothers and some that Mum and Dad told me .
We all lived at 38 Montague Road Leytonstone ,it is next to Wanstead Flats were there was a barrage balloon site run by airman who we played football with .
I saw the bulldozers making great mounds of earth it was to stop the aircraft from landing as the cold war was on, we all thought that Hitler was going to invade. Some times the barrage balloon would break away and a think the RAF had to shoot it down .
We had a Anderson shelter that was between to families,in the summer we all went to the shelter as it was cool in the winter it was half full of waterso we stayed in the house.
One night when we were all in the shelter Dad heard a thump outside he took a look and saw an insendery bomb he called the man who was in with us to help him to put it out ,but he kicked it towards the fence I think Dad called him a few names but they but it out with earth .
When the raid was over we collected the shrapnel some of it was hot we put it in boxes.
When we were bombed outI can recallall that happened. We lived in a semi-detched house with front room middle room were Mum and Dad slept ,living room and scullery, upstairs Granddad slept.
We two boys slept under a cot in the living room Brian was a baby he slept in the cot, Mum put a chair and a pillow over to protect him
Mum and Dad must have covered us when the bombs were going off.
When we were bombed out I slept through it all ,but Ken heard it all that gave him fainting fits, but he soon grew out of then.He shook me awake and told me to get out ,I put my hand out and felt great lumps of something I said to Ken that I could not as Brian had broken the vase on the mantle piece, then Dad said come on out boys,I remember climing up over a pile of rubbish which was the ceiling Dad grabbed me, I look up and saw that the window was not there ,just a big hole are we bombed out I asked ,yes he said but we will get you all out .
We then walked to the school in Davis Lane Dad carried me and Ken I was eight Ken was four Mum carried Brian When we arrived at the school they put Ken and myself on a pile of stretchers as all the other room were full.
While we were there a nurse had a look at Dads face it was red with blood as she wiped the side of his face it went red again it was peppered with small bits of glass, that is Ken fainted. Mum had a small hole in her cheek were some of the glass went through, she went to Hemel Hemstead Hospital with Brian.
Mum took a piece of glass out of her gum twenty years later.
After a while the bombing started again so they moved us to another centure which was under the railway arches were a rest place was set up
We were moved by taxi with a man standing on the outside telling the driver were to go to miss the objects on the road.
When Ken and myself came to the next morning Dad had gone ,someone told us that he went to get some clothes for us as we were only in our night clothes, He came back with some .
I heard later that a policeman had tryed to stop him when he told him what he wanted it was ok .
Mum told me years later that Dad had found her purseit was clean not a spot of dust on it and no money and the saving books had gone so were the sheets from the drawer.
This is my story it all happend a long time ago but a still recall all of it. It made me statter for years after .
