During WWII my Nan lived in an end of terrace house in Liverpool, with her parents, 2 brothers and two sisters.
One morning Mama (Nan鈥檚 mother) had gone out early with the whole families ration coupons to do the weekly shop, to try and find some decent food (which was scarce).
Just after she had returned the air raid sirens started for a very rare daylight raid. The shopping was put on the kitchen table and the family went out into the shelter at the end of the garden. They heard a few planes but no explosions near them. The all-clear sounded and they went back inside.
There was a VERY large bomb hanging from the kitchen ceiling, its fins had got caught in the floor boards of the room above. The nose of the bomb was swinging inches above the precious shopping! Nan said it was the only time she ever heard her mum swear.
As Nan was the smallest Mama made her crawl back into the kitchen to fetch the bags before they left the house.
After that, during a raid Mama would stay under the stairs so she could keep an eye on things, rather than joining the rest of the family in the shelter!
