I was born in 1930 so was 9 years old when the war broke out. I went to Snydale Road School, Cudworth until I was 13/15 years old then I went to Barnsley Technical College.
Dad worked down the pit during the war, he was on permanent night shift.
I can鈥檛 remember eating meat while the war was on. We didn鈥檛 have any bonfire days either. We did on VE Day though and another on VJ Day.
I can remember the tank factory in Monk Bretton, Frazers it was called.
Holidays during the war were a day out at Roundhay Park in Leeds. We took the train from Cudworth Station and then the tram up to the park. When the war was finished we went to Cleethorpes and there was barbed wire all over the beach.
My grandparents lived at Upton and Grandad said when the bombers went over they were going to bomb Sheffield.
One day we went down to Storrs Mill wood to paddle in the River Dearne. A big lad took my pumps and chucked them in the river and another lad took me home on the cross bar of his bike.
We were frightened during the war.
