I was only seven when the war finished so to me I knew no other, so my life was a little bit different to others — I didn’t know peace. It was a case of being disturbed every night and going down three sets of stairs in the dark because of the blackout. We would sometimes sleep in the Air Raid Shelter, although mostly end up very tired the next morning. At school, they provided bunk-beds for us to sleep in during the day, to get the right amount of rest. Of course, this meant we got little work done!
