On Friday 21st March 1941 Plymouth endured some of the worst bombing of any place in the country with much of the city centre being razed. The story that emerges from the following documents held in the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office portrays not only a vivid impression of the devastation wrought on the city but also a poignant tale of personal tragedy. Collectively they recount a terrible incident — one of many - in Plymouth’s wartime experience. The contemporary account is still vivid and the subsequent declaration in the coroner’s court chilling in its succinct clarity.
