I used to travel from Gidea Park to Brentwood County High by train just 2 and a half days a week at first. Once I was trapped on a train during an Air-Raid.

During our School Certificate Exams (Equivilant of G.C.S.E's.) which was after D Day, the Germans sent Doodle Bugs over. We sat our exams in a School corridor to avoid broken glass etc. A teacher used to stand on top of the roof of the School with a whistle should she hear a Doodle Bug approaching.

A few times we had to abandon our exams and run to the UnderGround Shelters, possibly for hours! We were not allowed to talk as we were still under exam conditions. They used to read Emil and the Dovechues in the shelter. And we had to sit in silence.
