Fred joined the R.A.F. in May 1940 as an Air frame fitter based at Andover Aerodrome. He was involved with aerodrome defence at Brize Norton for a while.
Later he sailed from Greenock on the Clyde to join a convoy which took a very long time to reach Freetown on the Gold Coast in West Africa. His ship sailed on calling at Durban on the East Coast of Africa and then on to Mombay and finally to Delhi in India where he stayed for 18 months. He was moved to Columbo in Ceylon and did a total of four and a half years altogether.
He suffered quite badly from malaria, sand fly fever and dysentery before returning to the U.K. His grade was 2A corporal.
