I was eight years old when WW2 broke out and living in Barford Road Ladywood.
My elder sister Doreen and I were evacuated and were sent to Astley the other side of Stourport-On Severn. We stayed with a Mrs Cornish in a house called 鈥淧ound Piece鈥 which had servants and a gardner. We slept in the attic and were fed good country food such as pheasant, pigeon and starling pies. I attended the local school which had three classrooms, and we were shown the area around the village.
We were taken to meet the Baldwin family who were neighbours at Astley Hall but I don鈥檛 think Stanley Baldwin was present. At the time The Baldwin Family had a private plane in a local field and country sports such as shooting were practiced.
Occasionally we were billeted with other people in the area with raging results, but in spite of all of the advantages and holiday lifestyle we were very pleased to return home after a month period away. Just in time for the first air raid.
