My sister and I were evacuated. My sister was flat-footed, so I had to bind her feet every night. School days were known as ‘half-times’(we had to share with the local children, so they staggered us) We enjoyed this we could go pick potatoes and earn a few pennies. One day we were surprised to see a half a pig hanging in the living room!
Because of the air raids, gas and electricity were sometimes cut off. People had to cook on a fire range.
