I was born in 1946, but my father served in the war ... he was in the RAF in Coastal Command.
So he would fly 12-hour stints over the sea.
He came from a very poor family, so the war to him was a wonderful thing ... this was because it enabled him to achieve things that would not have been possible. He taught radar in the war to the Canadians ...
My parents lived in Salford, in a small terraced house ... my father was stationed in Scotland, but had days off ... but the cost and time of travelling back to Salford from Scotland was too much. So he'd stay in Scotland.
He loved fishing ... he would go fishing when he was on leave in Scotland. He couldn't afford a permit, but fished anyway. On one occasion he was caught by the bailiff. But my father was a good fisherman, and had caught some nice fish. The bailiff invited him back to stay with his family ... and they became life-long friends.
My father truly believed that the war gave him real opportunity to learn new things and get a good education.
