This story has been written onto the ´óÏó´«Ã½ People’s War site by Cornwall CSV Storygatherer, Martine Knight, on behalf of Denis Cannicott. His story was given to the Trebah WW2 Video Archive, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2004. The Trebah Garden Trust understands the terms and conditions of the site.
In the lead up to D-Day I was a 13yr. old living on the Helford.
My father was chauffeur at Bosahan, opposite Trebah beach, which was one of the beaches chosen for the embarkation of the troops.
I recall the concrete road being built to the beach and, when the night arrived for the troops to go, watched all the landing craft being loaded. The river was full of them and it went on through the night. Next morning I thought I’d go and look at how it was progressing and found that not a single man was left and the river was empty.
