Dear Eric
What a surprise to hear that you are ‘Somewhere in France’! I had a trunk call to Daddy last week, and he says you were still in England, which relieved me greatly, but now, all of a sudden, you are ‘over there’. I expect it is a great change from the peace over here. Last night I saw the Universal News, (Churchill’s visit to the beaches etc., and the making of an airfield, and some of the fighting, and I must say you are all very marvellous, you boys, going into it so cheerfully.
Did you receive my letter, and snaps of Glenda. I hope you did. I have had no news of Ron for 21 days, so am wondering how he is, and if he has gone across.
Do drop me a line — especially Glenda, who is very proud of you being in France. One of her friends (Ann Tyler) has an ‘Uncle Eric’ in France too. His name is Tyrer.
We are having lovely weather and picnics and bathing etc. I hear the food is very good ‘over there’. I listen to all the news and broadcasts. I always listen to the 10 o’clock (mid morning) news, particularly, so think of me in ‘Blighty’ (i.e. ‘Manx’ Blighty) — having my coffee, and thinking of you.
We break up about July 20th and go home (matrons) about the 25th. May have a week in Peel, and then a week with Joan in Blackpool, and then on home to Sail.
All our love. Keep our ‘Smith’ flag flying,
Yours, with love,
Win.
P.S. Letter enclosed from Glenda

P.P.S. We are very proud of you being a Corporal!!
