I was born one month after the war started on Sept 3rd 1939. My mother said she was very upset not knowing what the future held for us. My earliest memories of the war were the huge barrage balloons staked out on land just south of the old scotswood bridge. They were there to deter german bombers away from Vickers Armstrong鈥檚 factory. As a child I used to be fascinated by the factory being painted in camouflage colours eg green, brown etc. to make it look like the countryside.
