I am an old Normandy Veteran I am 78 years of age. I fought from Sword Beach to the German Border with The Third British Infantry Division, known as 鈥淢onty鈥檚 Ironsides鈥 or 鈥渢he Iron division鈥 my Company was 246 Field Company. Royal Engineers. I was just 19 at the time of the invasion. I was wounded twice, once near Vire adjoining the American sector. And again at Overloon near the German border.
I am 100% war disabled; I fought all the way from Sword till I departed in late autumn of 1944.
I took part in the battles near Hillman, Caen, Pegasus Bridge. Le Bisley wood. Goodwood. Vire. The Falaise Pocket. The chase to the Seine. Eindhoven. Brussels. The Market Garden offensive. Nijmegen and the down to Overloon and Venraij.
My company provided three highly trained teams to open up a path from Sword Beach to the road beyond. Both on Queen White and Queen Red sectors, to assist the teams they were rearmed with 鈥淏eehive鈥 explosive charges to blow anything in the way out of existence. As a reserve, they had flamethrowers to assist the Assaults,
These three teams were Assault demolition, and Assault mine clearing teams. They were charged with the task of opening up the beach path, no matter what, or who. All was completed satisfactorily. After the Assault, the company then drove a path inland to Hermanville.
Brian.
