My mother was a young French teacher in the Portsmouth area at the time (Had taught in France before the war) Civilian voluntary work included anti incendary work. Wearing saucepan on head at times to protect from shrapnel!
She also told of the exhausted French and British men she gave tea etc to as they were received off the ships after Dunkirk. The complete exhaustion they showed was most shockimg. She never forgot how terrible they looked Sometimes no boots, still damp and bedraggled with nothing in the way of equipment.
Sadly she died in August 2002
