My father joined the army at th age of 14 in January 1922 and in 1924 went to India as a bugle boy. He served there for 7 years.
He was with the 52nd Light A.A Regiment of Territorials (The Burnley Boys) who were the 1st
Territorial artillery in the BEF to set foot on French soil, and brought them back through
Dunkirk!!
As he was well over 6ft tall and well built, he stood in the sea and helped others to the boats.
On his safe arrival back in England he threw the
following note from the train
Darling
Arrived back in England today, out of hell into heaven it seems. No knowing what they will do with whats left of a great little army so I cant
say anything about where I am going. Someone says its Aldershot
Love to you all
Charlie Boy.
He later went to N Africa and was at the siege in Tobruk. He also became an Instructor to a South African Regiment.
On his return to England he was posted to Manorbier in Wales, under the command I believe of Duncan Sandys who later became an M.P. He was
an Instructor to an American Regiment
Unfortunately he was killed in a gunnery accideny in Manorbier in June 1942,and is buried in Cornwall.
