My Nan was evacuated when she was 8 years old to Middlesborough. She went with her sister who was a year older than her. Middlesborough was a village near York. She did not wear a gas mask but she had to carry it. She was not scared or worried because her parents came to visit her every month. She was not hungry at any time. She did not go back to Preston for two years.

When she got back she missed the countryside. When she got back her school was bombed flat. Her house was damaged and there was big pond on the site of the bombing to put fires out.
She was taught in a wooden hut. She did lots of singing because there was not much pencils or paper. She had to walk three miles to get to school every day plus there and back for lunch.

Message 1 - Middlesbrough

Posted on: 22 April 2004 by Peter - WW2 Site Helper

Hi Mathew

Whilst there are 28 places in England called Middleton, there is only one Middlesbrough: a large town in the North Riding of Yorkshire on the Tees, about 50 miles north of York. There is, however, a tiny village near York called Middlethorpe. Could this be where your nan was evacuated to?

Regards,

Peter
