in november 1941 the barham was in convoy in the med, she was hit by 3 torpedoes , my dad was in the sick bay when the torpedoes hit , he ran to the stairs and tried to get to the top deck. As he reached the deck of the ship it exploded and threw him from the deck into the sea,
two and a half minutes later the ship rolled over and sank taking 862 men with her.
My Dad was 1 of only 398 men to survive this tragic event.
this story was pieced together from the snippets that my Dad told us over the years.
I would like to dedicate this story not only to my lovely Dad who died in dec 1994, but to all the men who served on hms ships during ww2

Message 1 - H.M.S.Barham

Posted on: 02 April 2005 by bryansamuels

I believe that I am the only living survivor in the west country. There are only about 10 left and they are in various parts of the world. The Barham survivors Association meet every year at Portsmouth, in May but they are children and grandchildren of the crew. I have several photos of the sinking taken from H.M.S.Valliant.
We were actually a fleet of three battleships and a flotilla of distroyers. The sub skippered by Captn Von Tiesenhausen, got through the screen of distroyers undetected and pumped four fish (torpedoes) into the portside of Barham. She sank in 4.5 minutes. I have written of my experiences on www.watersideweb/barham/samuels.
I was the youngesy survivor at 17yrs 11months
