Just like my No.8
After being evacuated for a year or more I eventually, after being called up several times, reluctantly became a clippie at Willesden Garage. Reluctant, because I was so homesick as an evacuee and thought that possibly I could stay at a local garage and not have to leave my mum and dad.My two brothers were still evacuees at Cirencester, Gloucestershire.
My strongest memory is of being in Oxford Street, punching tickets and arriving outside Selfridges Bus Stop when VE Day was shouted out and people were jumping on and off the bus. I put my ticket punch down and hid my money bag under the stairs in our locker and joined in the fun. Lots of laughing and talking and as soon as I could I handed in my notice and ended my career as a clippie.
