People in Story: Catherine Everitt
Location: Watford

I was one of six children. We were evacuated from St Albans to Watford during the war. We stayed in three houses altogether.

At one we were locked in the coal shed if we fought among ourselves.

We had to make up cigarettes from old cigarette ends, and were told off if we didn't make enough.

It got so bad that in the end our mother 'kidnapped' us and we went to a Salvation Army hostel, but the police took us back.
