I used to visit my Grandparents over Christmas, and there was a thorn tree that used to flower. They had to get a ladder to pick the bloom. When I think back about the tree it reminds me of those flowers that come out at Christmas. If you picked the flower when it flowered, the next morning it would have died.
Young men used to pick the flower for their girl friends. There were lots of flowers in the tree - it used to be in full bloom. Everyone got excited about it - the aduts would be chattering. I was only about 12. My grandmother didn't like little girls. She certainly didn't like me, and I looked just like her! She used to be quite unkind to me. She would give my brother pocket money and not me. She would make us do chores, cleaning the silver, but we never seemed to get it right for her. I had the worst bedroom in the house - I could hear the rats and mice running round the granary the other side of the wall. I never complained about anything, and when she died my mother was so surprised to hear that I didn't like her. There are other grandchildren still living there. I lived in Wales. I also used to spend 6 weeks with her every summer. My mother used to think that I liked going there. I often wondered how my Aunty used to fare, being the only girl in the family. She thought her boys could not do anything wrong.
I was happy working with my grand-dad - he taught me how to paint, how to prune and clip hedges. I used to read for him, he was lovely.
